The Churchill War Rooms, previously named the Cabinet War Rooms, is a museum created from the underground bunker complex used by the British government of prime minister Winston Churchill during the Second World War.
Built in 1938 and completed just before the outbreak of war, the war rooms became the nerve centre for the British government and Naval, Air Force and Army high commands.
Notable rooms are the Map room where the progress of the war was updated daily for the King, the Cabinet and military chiefs, Churchills private office and sleeping quarters and the transatlantic hot line to the White House. Although Churchills office also included a bed, he rarely if ever slept underground, preferring to sleep at his official residence at 10 Downing Street.
