Hampton Court Palace
King Henry VIII and all that
Built for Cardinal Wolsey, in 1514 the palace was taken over by Henry VIII when the cardinal fell from favour in 1529. The building was extended in the 17th century by King William III in an attempt to rival Versailles. It was last used as a royal palace in the 18th century.
As well as the palace itself and its gardens, this historic site includes the celebrated maze, a historic real tennis court and a huge grape vine, claimed to be the largest in the world.
The palace is approximately 11 miles from central London and may be reached by rail from Waterloo to Hampton Court station or by river boat from Westminster Pier.
